The short answer: Yes, eligible Canadian businesses can advertise in ChatGPT. OpenAI's current Ads Manager availability page lists Canada for self-service access. The legal entity advertising and being billed must be based in an eligible country. The new image-generation ad format announced on 5 October 2026 has a separate initial US test planned for later this month.
For an Alberta business, the useful question is whether the available campaign, targeting and measurement fit the job. Alongside that paid decision, check whether your site can appear in organic AI answers and whether you can see it happening.
What OpenAI actually announced
OpenAI began testing ads in the US on 9 February 2026 and announced expansion to Canada, Australia and New Zealand in March. October is an addition to that programme.
The 5 October announcement introduces visual advertising during image generation for Free and Go users. The ads will be labelled and kept separate from the generated image. Testing is scheduled to begin later in October in the US with an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI also announced more conversion-measurement partnerships and described its safeguards for unsuitable ad contexts.
The sentence advertisers should read twice: "advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides." Buying an ad does not buy you a recommendation.
What to check before buying
Existing ChatGPT ads can appear below responses and use conversational context to help select relevant placements. The new image-generation test is not the whole advertising product.
Check advertiser eligibility, audience location and format availability separately. OpenAI's campaign guidance says some new self-service accounts initially advertise only in their home country. Geographic targeting options vary by country and campaign type. Before promising Alberta placements, confirm the actual options in the account, ad approval and conversion tracking.
Google is moving ads into AI answers too
Google's 2026 Marketing Live page previews new AI Mode formats and a Business Agent for Leads that can answer questions through ads. Its AI Mode announcement describes formats already in testing. Google had also announced US, English-language AI Mode ad tests in 2025. The cited 2026 pages do not establish Canadian availability for those new formats. Check the specific placement and market before budgeting for them.
The steering tools are evolving too. Google's AI Max update on 30 April 2026 announced AI Brief, designed to guide matching, messaging and audience in plain language. The announcement described an English-language rollout over the following months, so check availability in your account. Final URL expansion lets Google choose a landing page for each search. If you run Search campaigns, review those settings as queries get longer and more conversational.
Worth remembering that the surface itself is not new here. Google brought AI Mode to Canada in English in August 2025. Canadian customers have been able to ask it questions for over a year.
The part you can control this week
In June 2026, updated at the end of August, Google announced controls and reporting for website owners covering AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover. Two things in it matter.
The setting that can switch you off
Site owners can choose whether their content appears in and helps ground those AI features. Opting out removes traffic and impressions from those features. Google says the control is not a ranking signal for ordinary results, and that the features rolled out to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026.
Google's control documentation says inclusion is the default, although a property can inherit its parent's setting. Check Settings → Search generative AI, including any inherited choice. This controls inclusion in Google's specified AI Search features; it is separate from AI-training permissions and does not override participation in Google Ads.
The report that shows your visibility
Search Console now shows impressions for generative AI features, which pages appear in AI responses, and in which countries, with Google saying more metrics will follow. The Search Central blog introduced the Search Generative AI performance reports in June 2026. Preferred Sources also now surface in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
If the report is missing, Google's report documentation says the site may not have enough impressions yet. These are visibility metrics, not a count of enquiries or bookings.
Take a dental clinic in St. Albert whose owner reads that ads are coming to ChatGPT and wants a budget for it. The first step is to check the available ad options, rather than assume the new US image format is available locally. Another useful hour is spent confirming the clinic is eligible to appear in Google's AI features, opening the generative AI data to see which pages already show up, and making the booking page clear about new-patient availability. That detail gives people and search systems a clearer answer to the question a patient actually asked.
A checklist for this week
- Open Search Console and confirm your site's Search generative AI setting matches your intended choice, including any inherited setting.
- Look at the generative AI performance data. Note which pages appear and in which countries.
- Compare that against enquiries, not just sessions. Appearing in an answer is an impression, not a customer.
- Write the five questions a customer asks before they book, and check each is answered in plain text on a page, not only in a PDF or an image.
- State service area, hours, what you do not do, and how to reach a person. Keep important information accessible in text; appearance in an AI answer is never guaranteed.
- If ChatGPT advertising fits your goal, review Ads Manager eligibility and your account's targeting and format options before setting a test budget.
- Decide now which enquiry you would count, so you can judge any new channel on bookings rather than on novelty.
Where Lumin fits
- Our paid advertising work starts with the goal, the account access and the path from ad to enquiry, then confirms the intended conversion actually records. Google and Meta are among the channels we assess, and the page names Microsoft, Apple and ChatGPT advertising as options that may be considered when the audience, format and business fit.
- We do not guarantee leads, sales or a return on ad spend, and we will say when a new surface is not worth your time yet.
